Each of our three fraternity and sorority councils at CMU have different ways of recruiting new members, see below for details and how to begin joining the organization that is right for you. The best way to meet all fraternities and sororities at CMU is right before classes start in the fall is at MainStage or at Meet the Greeks in the spring. Anyone seeking to join any fraternity or sorority at CMU must have at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA and be a full-time CMU undergraduate student.
The Interfraternity Council (IFC) conducts a recruitment period when students return to campus in September and in January. Recruitment begins as an open process, with men going to the chapters that interest them over the course of the week. During this time, the 11 fraternities will organize various activities to allow potential members to get to know the fraternity brothers and understand what is involved in being an active member. At the conclusion of recruitment, fraternities will extend bids, or invitations to join. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are all encouraged to consider membership opportunities during the fall and spring semesters. If you know members in a fraternity you are interested in, you can contact one of their members about more information regarding the chapter's recruitment or submit your information online to be contacted directly.
Membership Intake is the membership selection is a process conducted by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). NPHC affiliated fraternities and sororities typically do not accept a student for membership until the student has completed at least 12-24 credit hours with a minimum GPA requirement set by each chapter.
The best ways to show interest in an NPHC chapter are: attend chapter sponsored programs and events, attend an interest meeting or informational for that chapter, get to know the members of the organization, research information about the group you are interested in (suggested methods include national websites and personal conversations with members), and show your own involvement on campus by getting involved in clubs, performing community service, and taking on leadership roles.

Formal recruitment is the main process that the Panhellenic Council (NPC) sororities use to recruit new members. Simply put, formal recruitment is process of getting to know the sororities while they take the opportunity to get to know you. The week consists of four rounds (5 days) of events that allow potential members the opportunity to learn about all 11 Panhellenic sororities at CMU as well as what it means to join a sorority. Each potential member will be assigned a Recruitment Counselor (also known as Gamma Chi) who will be available during the entire process to answer questions. During the recruitment events women will have the time to learn about sorority activities, financial obligations, new member programs, scholarship, community service, and sorority life in general. Throughout the week, by the process of mutual selection, guests will narrow their choices until they find the sorority that is the best for them.
